      Minor in Period Instrument Practice

      Period Instrument Practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis

      Proximity to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis offers Master's students a unique opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of a period instrument. Alongside standard instrumental/vocal classes, students acquire a basic understanding of Early Music by exploring in greater depth the historical context in which these instruments were developed and played.

      Structure

      Structure Minor Klassik Instrument Practice in German

      Minor in Period Instrument Practice - Compulsory module (16 CP):

      • Period instrument/vocal classes
      • Choice of classes, projects, concerts
      • Major-specific projects, masterclasses, workshops and study days
        Vocal-specific: Gesture; Lied class; opera class; speech coaching; speech training and vocal care; vocal ensemble M-R

        For keyboard and string instruments: National styles; 17th and 18th century music ensembles; interpretation of 18th/19th piano music; maestro al cembalo etc.

        For lead instruments: Orchestral performance for strings and wind instruments; small musical formations; 17th and 18th century music ensembles; 18th and 1th century chamber music; alta capella; recorder consort, viola da gamba consort; Renaissance viola da gamba consort etc.

      Minor in Period Instrument Practice - Elective module (4 CP):

      • Historical composition techniques R-R/class
      • Historical composition techniques R-R/seminar
      • Introduction to thoroughbass and counterpoint
      • Organology R-R
      • Notation Baroque/Classical eras
      • Performance practice
      • Music history R-R
      • Attendance at four symposia of choice
      Instrument rental

      If required, baroque instruments can be borrowed from the Basel Academy of Music. To instrument rental (zetcom.net).
      The rental price can be found in the current "General Terms and Conditions for Instrument Lending".
      If the desired instrument is not available, students rent an instrument themselves. In this case, the university will contribute a maximum of CHF 200 per semester towards the hire costs. Reimbursement is made using the "Student cash expenses" form and a copy of the external rental invoice.

      The application, including confirmation of admission to the MA programme for the subsequent academic year, must be filed by 20 June.
